    Hirudotherapy

Hirudotherapy is a treatment using medical leeches. This kind of therapy is known from the time of extreme antiquity and is still alive nowadays. This fact testifies its efficiency in healing various kinds of illnesses and diseases. The method of hirudotherapy is approved by many countries.

The enormous experience of using medicinal leeches in medical purposes is saved up during many centuries. With the development of science the mechanism of action of a secret of salivary glands of leeches was deciphered, biologically active substances which are included in it were opened, their influence on the certain structures of an alive organism is investigated. Some medical forms are created on a basis of biologically active substances of salivary glands of leeches and work on creation of new substances is conducting. Modern hirudotherapy differs from the ancient one because now we do not use wild leeches: instead we use leeches grown at special biofactories where they are in a severe quarantine. Besides, nowadays we use a leech only once. This fact completely excludes the chance of infecting a patient.

The obvious advantage and absolute safety of hirudotherapy is checked up by thousands of years of experience of mankind and does not cause any doubts. One of the first substances found in salivary glands of medicinal leech is hirudin-the substance oppressing the process of blood clotting. Then such anticoagulating substances as ferment destabilaza, ingibitors of plazmine, callecrein of plasmine and others were opened. Factors of diffusion-ferments of gialuronidaza, collagenaza, the factors appressing the mediators of pain-cininaza,antisclerous factors were investigated as well. Again opened substances are studied. Thus,a medicinal leech is a small “factory” manufacturing biologically active substances. The result of action of biologically active substances on an alive organism are:

    -normalization and improvement of capillary circulation;
    -expressed antiinflammation effect;
    -antistressful and adaptogene effects;
    -immunostimulating and immunomodulating effects;
    -anesthesia;
    -anticoagulation;
    -antibacterial effect;
-improvement of an endocellular exhange and the realization of these mechanisms has both local and general character.

The existence of skin-visceral connections with the definite organs is well known. Biologically active substances act to organs during the blood-sucking work of medicinal leeches through viens. It promotes the improvement of blood circulation in the certain organ, renders trombolitic, antiinflammatory, immunostimulating action, raises nutrition of tissues, strengthens tissues immunity. It’s impossible to name all diseases which can be treated by using hirudotherapy. It’s easier to name contra-indications here :
    absolute-hemophilia,
    relative-pregnancy,anemia,hypotonia.

Hirudotherapy may be applied at any diseases known nowadays. It can be used as an independent method of treating and in complex with the others. Doctors know perfectly well how it is difficult to struggle with chronic inflammatory diseases. The matter is that at all varieties of clinical displays of illnesses mechanisms of protection of an organism are universal-emission mediators of inflammation, vazoconstrictors, apireties and some other biologically active substances into blood. Everything comes to aspiration of a live organism to delimit the nidus of inflammation by deterioration of blood circulation and capillary-tissue permeability, creation of an inflammatory shaft by cellular and conjunctive tissue structure and a temperature mode in the given area.As a result of it the concentration of drugs for example an antibiotic in the nidus of inflammation is much lower than in blood. The increase of a dose of a chemical drug doesn’t solve a problem because leads to excessive allergy and strikes a blow on other organs-(on liver, kidneys, spinal cord, endocrin glands). As a result we have a lot of problems: disbacteriosis, hepatitis, nephropathy, immune deficiency conditions, but the problem of chronic inflammation for a given patient is not solved. Here it’s a time to recollect about hirudotherapy. Biologically active substances containing in saliva glands of medicinal leeches can restore blood circulation in the nidus of inflammation, remove an ischemia of organs, provide capillary tissue exchange and due to it can carry out the transport of chemical drugs into the nidus of inflammation, improve immune protection and regeneration of tissues. In such conditions the using of the same chemical drugs is possible in smaller doses. These factors do not limit the abilities of hirudotherapy to influence the nidus of inflammation. The matter is that in salivary glands of medicinal leeches there are some substances capable to detain the growth of bacterias. One of the most investigated substances is hirudin. In experiments at animals a bacteriastatic and bactericidal action of hirudin has been proved. The main reason of medicinal action of hirudin for example at thrombophlebitis is in its bactericidal property. That’s why it becomes clear that the using of leeches both at aseptic inflammation and at inflammation caused by the bacterial agent helps the organism. The property of a secret of salivary glands of a medicinal leech to penetrate through”demarcacional shaft” of inflammation is deternimed by the action of the factor of penetration-the enzime gialuronidaza. This enzime is capable to unactivate the action of gialuron acid which is the cementing substance for conjunctive tissues.
Such feaeture of hirudotherapy essentially distinquishes it from the other methods of treatment.
Besides the mentioned above effects of hirudotherapy it’s necessary to remember about one such as the irritation of biologically active points influence on reflex zones. It was noticed long ago that leeches prefer to sit on the certain areas of skin which correspond to points of ancient Chinese methods of treatment-needleacupuncture. In result of hirudotherapy we receive the effect in treatment not only due to action of biologically active substances of leeches' secret, but also by means of influence on reflex zones.
For example at the treatment of hypertonic disease biologically active points of occipital and cervical area are used and the influence of these points gives anaesthetic, vasodilating and hipotenzive effects. The other action of leeches is blood taking. One leech exhausts from 5 to 10 ml of blood..Bleeding lasts for some hours(about 12-24 hours) and the patient loses about 20-30 ml of blood. Thus due to influence of 5 leeches simulteneously the patient loses 100-250 ml of blood and this way of blood taking has unquestionable advantages before taking blood from veins. Taking blood from the area connecting with the ill organ lasts for about an hour. Thus, it is creating conditions of a stable and lasting many hours drainage and venous unloading of the given area,in the certain area there usually is an improvement of microcirculation, the nutrition of tissues, cellular exchange, venous stagnation is usually liquidated and the ischemia of organ is usually eliminated. After a treatment course consisting of 5-10 procedures using from 4 to 10 leeches a good clinical effect is marked. At the cardiovascular pathology leading to decompensation of blood circulation(ishemic heart disease, intimate defect) the leeches appointing to the area of a liver authentically reduce increased arterial pressure, leads to reducing the stagnation in the liver,to improvement of lung ventilation and unloading of heart. The effect comes in a result of a direct hipotenzive and anticoagulating action of hirudin and in not a smaller degree due to reducing of peripheral resistance. At diseases of cardiovascular system hirudotherapy plays a special role.It is easy to find an explanation for this taking into account its above mentioned properties.Besides it is necessary to note the ability of hirudin to influence on blood clotting. The liquid condition of blood and its clotting is provided by functional interation of two systems of the organism:clotting and anticlotting. The anticlotting system supports blood in liquid condition, protecting it from clotting, the second one provides protection from bleeding at infringement of integrity of blood vessels. For the patients with ischemic heart disease, hypertension, for old people, for patients with diabetes the main problem is atherosclerosis of vessels and as a result-angiopathy;atherosclerosis is nothing that infringement of integrety of blood vessels.which provide and activate the system of clotting. In a result one of the most terrible displays of diseases of heart and vessels is the thrombosis of arteries in the vital important organs. The output of thrombosis are the infarction of heart, brain, lungs brinding sometimes to lethal outcomes. Stimulation of fibrinolitic activity and anticlotting system of blood at such diseases, oppression of formation of trombs, and reducing of viscosity of blood are necessary both with medical purpose and for preventive maintanance of ischemic conditions. The mechanism of oppressing activity of hirudin on thrombin is investigated. Hirudin blocks the action of thrombin and the last one losing its properties, doesn’t promote the transition of fibrinogen into fibrin.Besides the secret of saliva of a medicinal leech blocks an anitial attachement of thrombocytes and completely supresses their aggregetion on a surface of collagenus. Thus, the secret of salivary of a medicinal leech influences on cellular and plasma factors of blood clotting. In researches of many authors it is marked that after the assignment of leeches there is a normalization of separate parameters of coagulogramme-at anitial combination of hyper coagulations the anticoagulating system is activating and on the contrary becomes more active. Similar effect was not received even when we use such widely known anticoagulants as heparin and aspirin. We should add the lipotropal effect of enzymes of salivary glands of medicinal leeches which consists in the ability to influence on blood lipids. At the beginning of the century some scientists expressed the assumption that the development of atherosclerosis can be prevented by applying medicinal leeches. In 1984-1989 it was experimentally proved that at long introvenous introduction of a secret of salivary glands of medicinal leeches to the rats which were in the condition of a strongly expressed atherosclerosis the last ones had reduction of lipids in abdominal and lung arteries.

It’s well known that the lipoproteids of low density and lipoproteids of very low density promote the development of atherosclerosis, but the lipoproteids of high density play the role of the protective antisclerous factor. At ishemic heard disease there is a redistribution of cholesterol in different classes of lipoproteids. The quantity of it raises in lipoproteids of low density and in lipoproteids of very low density being reduced thus in lipoproteids of high density. The patients of this group have authentic increase of the level of common lipids, triglicerids, cholesterol in arterial walls. Many authors engaged in this problem mark the authentic reduction of triglicerids and cholesterol in blood after several session of hirudotherapy. It allows to draw a conclusion that lipotropic ensymes secret of salivary of medicinal leeches may be used at atherosclerotic defect of vessels irrespective of primary localization of atherosclerosis. Probably the effect of “rejuvenation” which may be noticed after hirudotherapy-the appearance of shine in eyes, the improvement of skin elasticity, the appearance of flush, the disappearance of the mask of tiredness on patients faces,a vigorous kind of patients. It's possible because in this case we deal with the mechanism of increasing of vascularization of skin and internal organs. Probably, due to the action of girudin and gialuronidaze(the factor of penetration)it is improving not only blood circulation is organs-targets,but in other organs and tissues due to the best capacity of cappilary-tissues exchanging and so on. It promotes the reduction of swelling, the dissolution of the organized blood-clots,cosmetic effect. The using of leeches promotes the increasing of local immunity as well.

Diseases of vessels, heart, chronic nonspecific diseases of lungs leading to heart and liver incompetence may be treated with hirudotherapy. At heart incompetence and chronic lung’s heart the stagnation in a big circle of blood circulation takes place and this fact leads to functional liver incompetence. The unloading of a big circle of blood circulation at hirudotherapy(the improvement of blood circulation in region),the action of lipotropic enzymes, the reduction of a hypostasis of liver-all these factors promote the improvement of patients health due to the complex influence of leeches secrets on organism.

Hirudotherapy as we see should be regarded not only as a preventive maintenance, but also as a method of treatment at ishemic heart disease, insult and other vascular pathologies,at diseases of exchange,at endocrine diseases, nervous diseases, at all inflammatory diseases and so on. As a result it’s necessary to note that the succers of hirudotherapy depends not only on biological properties of leeches secret but also from the experience of a doctor and joint actions of a patient and a doctor.

    Eye Diseases and Leech Therapy

Ever wondered how our ancestors dealt with their medical problems? Many very important medical breakthroughs only occurred during the past century and brings us to question what passed for medicines and curative procedures.
Hirudotherapy, popularly known as leech therapy has also been referred to by other names such as bleeding, leeching, and bloodletting, but basically, it refers to the use of leeches for medical treatment and is one of the methods our ancestors used to cure various ailments
The European specie of leeches (from which Hirudotherapy gets its name) has long been used for medical purposes. Leech therapy dates back to the 1800s, where leech therapists typically used several leeches in each session. Leeches can consume as much as 10 to 15 ml of blood and expand dramatically in size. Once full, they automatically fall off the body, but can be removed using different methods. One technique used is applying salt or salt water, but this can make the leech vomit up the blood, which creates a higher risk of infection.

    varied conditions

There are many benefits to Hirudotherapy, therefore making it extremely useful to treat various conditions. When a leech bites, its saliva is injected into the patient’s bloodstream. This saliva contains Hirudin, which has an anticoagulant and hemodilution effect, preventing clot formation, which is very important because a clot can travel through the general circulation and block a blood vessel, thereby depriving organs of the necessary blood flow and the nutrients they need. This will cause ischemia and, eventually, failure of the organ involved. This can be fatal if the organ involved is the brain, heart or lungs as it can cause a stroke, heart attack or lung embolism.

Hirudin also helps reduce the blood’s thickness, thereby promoting optimum blood flow and preventing the risks associated with sluggish blood flow.

    Leech Therapy for Periorbital Hematoma

One of the major features of leech therapy is the ability leeches have of extracting pooled blood. It also has an anti-edematous effect, which is especially helpful as a conservative measure to evacuate pooled blood as in the case of a periorbital hematoma.
Periorbital hematoma is hematoma around the eyes – a sac of blood that the body creates to keep internal bleeding to a minimum. In most cases the sac of blood eventually dissolves, however, in some cases they may continue to grow or show no change. If the sac of blood does not disappear, then it may need to be surgically removed.

    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

It usually occurs after a large amount of pressure or force has been applied to the area and something that is definitely common among boxers. This is shown by a bluish green discoloration around the eyes, more popularly known as the ‘black eye.’ Disappearance of pooled blood in this area is particularly slow and can take from several days to a few weeks. Not only is it unsightly, but can cause light-headedness and headaches.

Leech Therapy can be used to immediately evacuate the pooled blood around the eyes so the bluish-green discoloration can disappear after a mere couple of days.
    Prevent Progress of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition that occurs when there is too much production of vitreous humor or when there’s a very slow reabsorption of vitreous humor. Vitreous humor is a transparent, jelly-like substance that gives nourishment to the eyes. Too much of it however, can be problematic, where the intra-ocular pressure can increase, causing compression of the eye structures. This causes gradual blurring of vision and slow but certain loss of sight.

Those at risk of developing glaucoma include diabetics, people over the age of 40, and people with a family history of the disease. If detected and treated in its early stages, glaucoma can be controlled and vision can be saved.

Leech Therapy can assist in the progression of this disease. The use of leeches to lessen the rate of blood flow to the eye lessens the production of vitreous humor and thus lessens the pressure inside the eye. Leech therapy can therefore help patients with glaucoma if this procedure is done in regular and frequent intervals and in conjunction with medicines that Ophthalmologists [medical eye specialists] prescribe to lessen the production of vitreous humor and lower the overall blood pressure in the area.
    Preventing Eye Inflammation

Another area where leech therapy can be beneficial is eye inflammation. Chorioretinitis [an inflammation of the choroid and retina of the eye], conjunctivitis [inflammation of the conjunctiva of one or both eyes], Keratitis [a condition in which the eye's cornea, the front part of the eye, becomes inflamed] and schleritis [a serious inflammatory disease that affects the white outer coating of the eye, known as the sclera] are just some of eye inflammation disorders.
Eye inflammations are inclined to have blood and other blood components pool in the affected area. This is the body’s natural response, where it’s attempting to fix whatever’s wrong or damage in that area. Unfortunately, the pooling of too much blood causes significant change in the pressure inside the eye and this pressure causes compression and damage to other parts.
    Blood expelled after different treatments

During Leech Therapy, blood is sucked out, thereby reducing inflammation. This leads to a reduction in pressure and lessens post-inflammatory complications.
Hirudotherapy also has a rejuvenating effect, where a feeling of vitality and renewed energy is felt by the patient. This is mainly due to relief from pain in certain treated conditions, as well as cleansing of the blood. There are no real explanations, but rather observations that over the centuries, Leech Therapy has indeed been used as a cure for many eye diseases.

    HIRUDOTHERAPY Treatment with Leeches

It's my pleasure to welcome you to Leech Therapy!
I refer to all areas in my profession as 'Tools for Life' and Leech Therapy is another 'tool' available to all of us as a natural gift of nature. I hope the information in these pages provides you with a greater understanding of these amazing creatures.
I'm aware many people are fearful of leeches for a variety of reasons. Some, because they have experienced leeches attaching themselves to their feet and legs without permission whilst walking through small streams and rivers and others who have heard stories about slimy worm-like creatures! Either way, it's only through understanding the background and health benefits that leeches provide, that we can truly appreciate the amazing assistance they can offer our health.
Let's first ask ourselves 'how much do we know about our bodies?' After all, we don't know what's going to happen to us in the next ten minutes, ten weeks or ten years! We live day by day enjoying life and all that's involved, whether it's coping with work pressures, relationships, family life, taking time out on holiday, enjoying financial gain as well as facing debt......or anything else you can think of, it's pretty straightforward - most of us lead busy lives and simply take our bodies for granted.

No, this isn't about selling life or health insurance! This is about asking ourselves how much thought do we give in understanding what's naturally available to help us enjoy a healthy and long life.
Unfortunately, most of us are aware of someone who has suffered a stroke or heart attack and it would be easy to presume these problems only occur in the later part of people's lives, but sadly that's not always the case. Cardiovascular and vascular disease for instance, is the number one cause of death in many countries and we are all aware that good diet and exercise helps reduce this risk and of course there are people like myself that have a high risk passed down through family genes, but not many people are aware that leech therapy is also a natural way of 'preventative' treatment.
Like many people, I had absolutely no idea I had cardiovascular disease, let alone an 'advanced' stage of disease, which would normally be observed in someone at least 20 years older than myself! Without doubt, I was incredibly fortunate surviving four heart attacks in one day before surgeons found many of my arteries had serious narrowing or complete occlusion.

Through years of experience understanding leeches, I developed my own methods to achieve incredible results using these emazing creatures to treat my carotid arteries, left subclavian artery and general well-being.
You can see I have provided photos of blood expressed from leeches from various treatments. The lighter red, clear blood is healthy, whereas the thick dark blood indicates a problem, usually also showing 'bits and pieces' - colestral and clots. Nothing in western medicine is known to dissolve plaque, as my interventional cardiologist stated in an article provided to the 'Sydney Morning Herald' [view press releases] but tests proved that after my methods of leech therapy, my blockages had been cleared.

Here at Life Clinic Hirudotherapy & Healing, we use experience known from the past to bring health and wellbeing to the future, using leech therapy.
Generally speaking, as long as we feel well, we don't always bother with preventative treatment and certainly, with vascular and cardiovascular disease being a number one killer, leech therapy is the most natural treatment available.
    Kindest regards, Mehdi

Leeches have been used in medicine for over 2,000 years and to fully understand why leech therapy works in such a wide range of applications, it's important to appreciate that the therapeutic activity of leech therapy is not based on a single mechanism of action, but on a combination of multiple effects. The leech is equipped with an extremely sensitive nervous system, which it uses to inspect the host and the host's blood.
Several hospitals throughout Australia and other countries use the recognised and extraordinary benefits of leeches in Plastic Surgery, Wound Healing and Microsurgery.

    Treating Diseases with Leech Therapy

Leech therapy has been used since the ancient times, and to prove its value to the medical world, this kind of therapy is still prevalent in our modern society. Although it has lost its popularity when the 20th century arrived, leech therapy now is having a comeback with more and more people getting interested and trying this one-of-a-kind yet ancient therapeutic method of treating diseases.
    Leech Therapy in a Nutshell

Leech therapy, as the name implies, is the utilization of medicinal leeches to cure and treat diseases and promote balance in the human body. With over 600 species of leeches, only 15 of them are discovered useful in the treatment of diseases, and this is the reason why there were classified as Hirudo Medicinalis, or simply medicinal leeches.

    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

These medicinal leeches are placed on the patient’s affected part (legs for vascular diseases, for example) and allowed to fasten their mouths on the patient’s skin. In the process of sucking out “impure” blood, the saliva of the leeches enters through the puncture site, delivering valuable enzymes that act as an anticoagulant, anti-clotting, vasodilator, anesthetic, bacteriostatic, and anti-inflammatory agents. All these promote good blood flow with the prevention and breaking up of formed clots. It also relieves pain and inflammation.
    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

Medicinal leeches are allowed to suck blood until they are bloated with impure blood and automatically disengage themselves from the skin. Each leech can hold at least 15 to 20 ml of blood. After a number of therapeutic days, a patient will notice marked improvement in his overall function.

    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

    Risks in Leech Therapy

Of course, any treatment of diseases poses its own risks. For leech therapy, you risk acquiring an infection. Like any other organism, leeches have bacteria commonly found in their guts, but there is little likelihood for this happening as blood oozes out of the bite. But for preventive measures, patients can be prescribed an antibiotic to avoid infection and to promote faster wound healing at the same time. Patients with HIV, AIDS or who are on immunosuppressive medication are not advised to go through leech therapy because their immune system is already compromised, and if bacteria entered their bloodstream, an infection could occur.

Knowing the methods of treatment and the risks involved, it is still the patient’s decision whether they would like to undergo leech therapy and it is always advised to notify their doctors of their decision.

Treating Vascular Diseases with Leech Therapy

One of the biggest killer diseases in our society today are vascular diseases. These can be hardening of the arteries or the veins, compromised blood flow due to narrowing of the vessels, formation of fatty plaques or deposits that impede normal blood flow and thickening of the vessels, just to name a few. Vascular disease can be caused by many factors, some of which are hypertension, the foods that we eat, obesity, our lifestyle, such as smoking and drinking, and inactivity. In the long run, these can lead to problems of the heart, the brain, and extremities.
Now, there are many pharmacological treatments that can reduce the progression of vascular diseases, but prolonged use of medicines can lead to side effects including organ complications. People who wish to try a different route for the treatment of vascular disease often choose Hirudotherapy or leech therapy.

    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

    The Leech Therapeutic Saliva

It is in the leech’s saliva that cures or prevents diseases. Their saliva has over 100 bioactive substances that are very beneficial. One such component is hirudin, which acts as an anticoagulation agent. Calin is another component that also inhibits blood coagulation. A component that dissolves fibrin clots as well as inhibits the formation of thrombus is the destabilase. Leech saliva also contains a Factor Xa inhibitor, and this compound restrains the coagulating effect of the coagulation Factor Xa. It also has hyaluronidase that enhances the viscosity of the interstitial fluid. For vasodilating effect, it has acetylcholine and histamine-like substances as well as carboxypeptidase A inhibitors. These three can increase blood flow by dilating constricted vessels. These are just some of the very useful components in leech saliva.
Now, how do these various components work to treat patients with vascular problems?
    Leeches shown during treatment
    of varied conditions

Effects of Leech Therapy to Patients with Vascular Diseases

Those mentioned above all work together to decrease the viscosity of the blood, making its consistency thinner so as to promote better blood flow. Blood that has a thick consistency makes it prone to clot formation as well as increases the blood pressure of an individual. These clots can travel to different parts of the body and block a vessel, which could then cause a stroke or heart attack. Thick blood poses a risk that the distal extremities, especially the tips of the fingers and toes, will not receive adequate oxygenated blood and the nutrients they need. Therefore, the anticoagulation component in leech’s saliva is vital as it naturally makes the blood thinner and works to inhibit platelet coagulation.
As stated above, the saliva’s vasodilating components dilate or widen the blood vessels, thereby promoting a better blood flow. With all these components working together, there will be a noticeable improvement in the vascular status of the patient.

    varied conditions

    Procedures for Leech Therapy

Before placing leeches on the skin, they are cleansed with clean water. Treatment sites vary, depending upon the affected part where the vascular problems are more prominent. For example, patients with cardiovascular disease undergo leech therapy on different areas of their body than, lets say, patients with peripheral vascular disease. In each case leeches will promote better blood flow to the region. Again, depending on individual cases, approximately each area requires between 7 to 14 leeches each consultation, but it still depends on the severity of the case. After the leeches are placed and have fastened themselves onto the skin, they are usually left until they automatically disengage themselves from the patient. When this happens, it means they are full of impure blood, and each leech can suck about 15 to 20 ml.
    Blood expelled after different treatments

Once treatment is complete, the area is cleaned and bandaged but may continue bleeding due to the anti-clotting factor in the leeches’ saliva.
After five days of continuous leech therapy, a patient will feel improvement in their condition.
    Word of Caution

Leeches are never placed on major veins like the jugular vein or the femoral vein. Likewise, they are not placed on the breasts, eyelids or delicate structures of the body.

    Cardiovascular Diseases and Leech Therapy

Since the early days of the 20th century, people have been using leeches to treat cardiovascular diseases because of the Hirudin enzyme in the leeches saliva, a substance which has systemic anticoagulative effects. A physician would usually prescribe the use of leeches when a person suffered a stroke or heart attack. Also, Hirudin stimulates segmental reflex mechanisms and this contributes to the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
    Hirudin and Drugs

It was only when anticoagulants such as aspirin and heparin were invented that the use of leeches declined. The effects of aspirin which are the inhibition of platelet aggregation and for the dissolving of thrombus or embolus, or thrombolysis, were found to be much more effective in treating cardiovascular conditions. However, scientists began to investigate further uses of Hirudin for cardiovascular conditions and they found Recombinant Hirudin was useful for Myocardial Infarctions (MI) and unlike heparin; hirudin was actually a direct thrombin inhibitor which did not need to have a cofactor like antithrombin III. Also, hirudin could inactivate fibrin-bound thrombins. However, the effects of the drugs derived from hirudin were much too potent and caused quite massive hemorrhagic adverse effects. Because of this, hirudin was not considered a good primary treatment for myocardial infarction; however, they found that it was a good treatment for Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia Type 2.

    Natural Leech Therapy

Natural leech therapy that is, the actual application of live leeches on the skin, was believed to have been an effective treatment for thrombosis and other coronary syndromes and Leeches have also been used to treat hypertension. Because leeches suck a hosts blood and its hirudin has anticoagulation, it may cause hypovolemic hemodilution which are two of the things that will reduce the pressure of the blood flow on the walls of the blood vessels, thus leading to reduction in blood pressure. However, it should be noted that since there are much more effective treatments for the reduction of blood pressure, such as anti-hypertensive drugs, leech therapy is now mostly considered as an adjuvant therapy rather than an actual first-line treatment.

    Application of Leech Therapy

Aside from those mentioned above, there are many conditions where leech therapy is considered useful. Leech therapy is sometimes used for Coronary Heart disease, where atheromatous plaques accumulate within the walls of the arteries that provide the blood supply for the myocardium.
It is also used for ischemic heart disease, where the blood supply to the heart is reduced. For this condition, leeches are applied to specific areas. During the first session, only about two to three leeches are used in each area, but as the treatment progresses, as many as 12 leeches can be used. During the first week, leech therapy can be applied every day if possible, leading to three times a week, over a course of approximately three to four weeks, depending on the individual.

    Leeches shown during treatment
    of varied conditions

For cardiovascular diseases, a minimum of three to four leeches can be applied to each specific area during the first session. Thereafter, up to 14 leeches can be applied. This treatment is usually applied three times a week for a total of ten applications, depending on the severity of the disease.
For Valvular heart diseases, again, leeches are placed in specific areas twice a week. Treatment is usually applied for a minimum of twelve sessions.
    Blood expelled after different treatments

Leech therapy is effective against these diseases, including hypertension because of its ability to relieve the stagnation of the blood in the vessels. When a leech is applied over a certain area, the blood flow to that area will increase, leading to better circulation. In fact, there are several cases where the patients overall wellbeing is improved after leech therapy and rejuvenation takes place.

Why Use Leech Therapy to Treat Arthritis?

Arthritis is one of the disabling diseases of the joints that affect not only the physical body but the quality of life as well. Chronic arthritis of a joint can cripple an individual, especially if it affects weight-bearing and multiple joints. There are many medications available to relieve pain and swelling, but sometimes this is not enough. Likewise, there are also many treatments available such as heat treatment and cold therapy to assist in the symptoms of arthritis, but these do not in fact reduce the pain on a long term basis. One of the oldest and most therapeutic therapies for this condition is leech therapy.
    What is Leech Therapy?

The use of leeches is one way to treat a multitude of illness and disease. Leeches have found their niche in the medicine world and serve many purposes. For one, they are commonly used as a management for blood clotting problems and are effective for people with diabetes. Secondly, their saliva releases substances and chemicals that can help decrease the inflammation process, thereby decreasing the pain one feels in an inflamed joint.

    of varied conditions

    Leech Therapy and Arthritis

Our joints need synovial fluid to move freely and pain-free. The articular surfaces of bones making up a joint are lined with lubricating membranes. Small membrane sacs, or bursae, occur in the space between the bones of most joints. These membranes lining joints are known as synovial membranes because they secrete synovial lubricating fluid. People suffering arthritis have less synovial fluid, causing pain on movement. The edges of the bones as well as the cartilages also deteriorate, adding more tenderness to the already painful joint. This causes inflammation due to tissue damage and prolonged, untreated arthritis can lead to deformities.
    Medicinal Leeches

How Can Leeches Help With Arthritis?

The leeches’ saliva assists in the treatment of arthritis. There are many substances and compounds in their saliva that reduces inflammation in a joint, some of which are the compounds that are called bdelins and eglins, acting as an anti-inflammatory. Aside from anti-inflammatory components, their saliva also has an anesthetic component that deadens the pain felt in the joint and also has a histamine-like substance that acts as a vasodilator. Acetylcholine, another component of the leech’s saliva is also a vasodilator. This is important in the treatment of arthritis because when the vessels dilate [expand], it increases the flow of blood, thus, washing away the compounds that cause pain and inflammation.
    Leech Treatment for Arthritis

There are approximately 600 species of leeches known worldwide and only 15 species are considered as medicinal leeches and used for arthritis and other treatments.

    Leeches shown during treatment
    of varied conditions

When a patient arrives in the clinic, the arthritic joint is first cleansed before medicinal leeches are allowed to attach themselves. They do this by puncturing the skin, where they will begin to suck on the patient’s blood. The Leech’s natural process removes infected blood and at the same time, releases therapeutic components and enzymes from its saliva, allowing these components and enzymes to work their wonders in reducing inflammation and pain in the joint.
Medicinal leeches remain attached to the patient for approximately an hour [times can vary] before they automatically disengage from the skin. Through the entire process, each leech would have sucked approximately 10 ml of blood. The areas are then cleansed and dressed to help prevent further blood loss.

Frequency of Leech Therapy for Arthritis

All cases are individual, but on average, medicinal leech therapy is usually performed three times a week for approximately six weeks. Improvement in joint pain and inflammation will be noticed within the first few sessions. Not only is it a safe way to treat arthritis, but it has also been one of the cures for this disease for many years.

    Leech Therapy: Migraines

Millions of people suffer from Migraines each year, in fact, eleven out of a hundred are said to have suffered or are suffering from Migraine headaches. Migraines are also said to be one of the leading causes of unproductivity in workplaces. Indeed, migraines can easily become the bane of a person’s existence, especially since the pain is usually so intense that one can hardly do anything else but complain and hope the pain goes away as soon as possible. The exact causes of migraine headaches are still unclear, although a number of years ago, it was thought to be a change in the state of the blood vessels supplying the brain. Now, however, the belief about migraine is due to the disturbance stems from the brain itself rather than in the vessels supplying it. One thing that’s sure is that the pain is somewhat relieved when circulation to the particular painful area is improved and the same principle holds true with migraines and this is where leeches come in handy.
Leeches are wonderful creatures, despite their reputation of being slightly – okay, overly disgusting to many people, they still prove to be helpful creatures! These remarkable invertebrates have found a way to keep us happy and at the same time keep themselves happy. It’s a relationship that’s mutually beneficial, so you really have to wonder why most people abhor them so much.

    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

    Leeches and Migraines

There is a theory that suggests migraines are caused by tiny blood clots that are formed in the heart, which then travel to the brain and these blood clots disrupt the flow of blood to the brain and thus cause the typical symptoms of migraine like the one-sided head-ache, photophobia, and nausea. As you may already know, there is a substance found in leeches called Hirudin. This substance is an anticoagulant, causing blood to become more diluted, thus allowing it to flow easier and faster. Hirudin can dissolve those little clots that have formed by converting fibrinogen to fibrin.
    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

It’s also known that leeches can increase the circulation in the body, even on the head, because its sucks just enough blood to get the blood stream flowing. Leeches can also cause vasodilation, meaning the vessels are widened, thus lowering the pressure on the walls of these vessels, improving blood flow.
Good blood circulation is vital! In a painful area, it’s absolutely necessary, especially in places like the brain and using leeches instead of medications for migraines is healthier. For one thing, medications can have serious side effects unlike leeches which, if handled properly, are relatively safe and have no prolonged adverse effects.

    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

Drugs, especially strong pain relievers like narcotics, can be addictive, so they’re not advisable if possible. Frequent use of certain drugs may also cause dependence and an increase in tolerance, meaning the next time you’re in pain, you may need a higher dose and as you may be aware, higher dosages of drugs can be toxic for your body.

Uses of Leech Therapy in Patients with Skin Grafts

Leeches, as we all know, can be viewed by many as quite disgusting creatures to look at, especially when they are full and bloated after gorging themselves on blood. Many people fear leeches and most stay away from them. Just the thought of having a leech attach themselves to a part of the body is enough to scare anybody. But remember, there are leeches that serve many purposes, especially when it comes to the medicine world. These medicinal leeches have long been used in the treatment of illnesses and diseases, and they have also been used in the healing process of skin grafts.
    What is a Skin Graft?

When a patch of skin is taken from the same individual and transplanted to another part of their body, it is called skin grafting or skin transplant. The patch of skin taken from an individual is removed from an area of the body that has good circulation to increase the chance of healing quickly and properly. Common areas where skin grafts are taken are those that are hidden underneath clothes, usually from the buttocks or inner thighs. After skin harvesting, the donor site is covered with sterile and non-adhesive dressing so as to prevent the occurrence of infection.

    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

After the patch of healthy skin is harvested, it is carefully spread over the required area. To keep it in place so as to promote good healing and good revascularization, well-padded dressings that exert gentle pressure are placed over the skin graft. Stitches can also be used to keep the skin graft in place to allow growth of new blood vessels, supplying the transplanted skin with blood, thus, increasing the healing process.

Skin grafts, although taken from the same individual, can still present a lot of risks. Infection of the recipient site can occur and delay healing and complications can also arise such as poor venous drainage leading to skin graft tissue death, and this is most especially true for patients whose vascular system is compromised.
    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

If this occurs, skin grafting can be repeated in the hope that the graft will be successful the next time, but nowadays, many surgeons use leeches to avoid the above from happening.
    Why Use Leech Therapy?

Leech therapy has been used for many years as a treatment for many conditions, especially when it comes to infection, so studies were done and it has been found, tested, and proven that leech therapy can really aid in the healing process of skin grafts.
How does leech therapy promote healing and recovery of patients who have undergone skin grafting?

As soon as the leeches attach themselves to the skin graft site, they begin to suck blood. While sucking, they also release a component called hirudin from their saliva. This component is very important in the inhibition of platelet aggregation (the process where the platelets clump or stick together) and coagulation cascade (a series of processes that ends with fibrin clot formation).

    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

If these two detrimental complications are present in a skin graft, there will be marked venous congestion, which slows down the healing process of the skin graft. When the skin graft receives poor circulation, the site becomes cyanotic [a condition in which the skin and mucous membranes take on a bluish colour because there is not enough oxygen in the blood], then it hardens and cools until the transplanted tissue dies. Now, because of the hirudin and the Factor Xa inhibitor present in the leech’s saliva, these processes are inhibited. Since there is a vasodilator component in their saliva too, venous congestion is further reduced, promoting good blood flow into the skin graft. After continuous medicinal leech therapy, the skin graft will soon turn warm and pinkish, a good sign that there is an adequate blood supply.

Frequency of Leech Therapy in Patients with Skin Grafts

Medicinal Leeches suck on the area for up to an hour or more, where they can consume one to two teaspoons of blood. Two days after leech therapy, the skin graft site will show a noticeable increased blood supply to the area.
The frequency of leech therapy in patients with skin replants is about four days to five days, while the frequency in patients whose skin grafts became compromised is about six to ten days.
    Blood expelled after different treatments

    Leech Therapy Contraindications

Not all patients who undergo skin grafts are a candidate for leech therapy. Those who have AIDS or HIV are not recommended to undertake medicinal leech therapy because it could put them at risk of bacterial sepsis. Likewise, patients who take immunosuppressive drugs are also not advised to undergo leech therapy due to the same reason.
Although the risk of acquiring an infection is small, patients with skin grafts that have become unsuccessful are not always given leech therapy.

    Diabetes

Today, Diabetes is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in the world. Millions of people have been diagnosed with Diabetes and everyday, thousands more become part of this statistic.
    Diabetes: A Quick Overview

Diabetes is a condition caused by the pancreas’s failure to produce enough insulin. The difference between type 1 and type 2 is the degree of insulin depletion. In type 1 diabetes, the onset is usually early in childhood, where there is absolute depletion of insulin. In type 2 diabetes, the onset is usually in adulthood around the age of 45 or older; where insulin production occurs, but an insufficient amount of insulin is produced.
When we eat, sugar turns into glucose and enters our bloodstream and is distributed to our body cells. Glucose is the “food” that gives our cells energy to function and insulin is crucial for breaking down glucose into the form that our cells can use. Without insulin or with too little insulin, glucose will not be absorbed by our cells, and they in turn will have no or little energy.

    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

In the above situation, glucose remains in the blood causing it to thicken, which can create complications in the body. Transporting blood from one organ to another requires more effort, resulting in the vessel walls thickening and becoming less flexible. The heart also becomes overworked with the effort required to pump blood around the body and of course, thickened blood struggles to pass through capillaries, let alone the smaller blood vessels. This alone compromises the blood supply to distal organs, let alone the fact that viscous blood can predispose a patient to develop blood clots, which can travel to major organs like the brain, heart and lungs causing a stroke, heart attack or lung embolism.
    Leech Therapy: An Ancient Science

Leech Therapy, also known as Hirudotherapy, is the treatment using medical leeches to assist various diseases. It is a therapy known since ancient times and remains very much in use today.
    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

Hirudo Medicinalis is a species of leech used for medical applications, which are able to consume up to 15 ml of blood, therefore, therapists can use up to 12 leeches simultaneously or more, depending on the type of disease treated. When leeches bite, they inject their saliva into the wound. Their saliva contains enzymes, different chemicals and substances that bring about diverse therapeutic benefits for the patient.
    Therapeutic Benefits for Diabetics

One of the most important substances recognised in leech salivary glands is Hirudin, a substance that suppresses the blood clotting mechanism. If you remember, it was mentioned earlier that Diabetes patients have viscous [thick] blood, which creates a higher risk of developing blood clots. Development and dislodgment of clots into the general circulation poses serious threats to anyone and can cause instant death, so the suppression of blood clotting is essential.
Hirudin also has a blood diluting effect, so apart from preventing blood clots; it also thins the blood, allowing the blood to circulate more easily, relieving pressure on the heart and blood vessels.

    Leeches shown during treatment
    of varied conditions

    All These and More

Aside from Hirudin, there are many other active substances found in the saliva of leeches, which contribute to the improvement and normalization of capillary circulation. There are also other substances which produce a natural analgesic, provide antibacterial properties, lower blood pressure and have an anti-inflammatory effect.
In Diabetes and other diseases, the microcirculation restoration effect of Hirudotherapy is essential in preventing amputation of fingers and toes. As we know, the care of the fingers and toes are crucial and since a diabetic’s blood circulation can be sluggish, where blood is sometimes unable to fully penetrate capillaries, the body cannot heal the smallest of wounds, or worse, necrosis [tissue death] can result and sometimes amputation of a finger, toe or limb is necessary to stop the spread of this condition to other parts of the body and Leech Therapy is known to improve circulation in distal parts of the body (i.e. extremities).
Today, hospitals worldwide use leeches to assist a number of areas, including restoration of circulation in reattaching parts of the body, such as fingers, toes, ears or hands which have been accidentally amputated and good blood supply and nerve connection is essential for recovery. These reattachment procedures are often complemented with leech therapy so that circulation is restored more easily and safely.

    Little Research

Scientific research is ongoing regarding the use of leeches in assisting countless diseases in the medical arena. Leeches are without doubt, miraculous creatures; their obvious advantage is the fact they have survived for several centuries, therefore allowing us to acknowledge that some mysteries of nature, for the time being, may remain unmeasured.
Leeches have and will always be thought of as the “wonder doctors” of science.

    Skin Diseases

The skin is the body’s primary line of defense against infection. There are three common layers to the skin - Epidermis, Dermis and Hypodermis, composed of skin cells, capillaries, sweat glands, and hair follicles.
Common skin diseases often occur in the two uppermost layers, the epidermis and the dermis. Uncomplicated skin diseases are easily cured because the skin generally sheds after a couple of days, but more complicated skin diseases are rooted at the hypodermis level and these are more difficult to cure. Some skin diseases are rendered incurable and only subject to remission and exacerbation; that is, they remain idle on occasions and flare up from time to time.

The Ancient Science of Leech Therapy

Leech Therapy or Hirudotherapy has been practiced for centuries and is still widely used today. Although there is not much documentation available, leech therapy is still well accepted in many parts of the world.
Hirudotherapy is the use of medical leeches for the treatment of a variety of diseases. Each leech can absorb a small amount of blood, no more than 10 to 15 ml at a time and, as such, several leeches are used during each therapeutic session. According to many ancient beliefs, Hirudotherapy is included in the five bio-purificatory procedures that are based on the belief that the removal of unclean and impure blood treats the root of all sufferings.

    Medicinal Leeches

    Hirudotherapy for Alopecia

Alopecia is more commonly known as baldness. We are not talking about the normal age-related baldness, but the gradual and radical hair loss due to a fungal infection or dandruff.
About 100 hairs are naturally lost from the head every day, though the average human scalp contains between 100,000 and 150,000 hairs. Genetic baldness is caused by the body's failure to produce sufficient new hairs, not by excessive hair loss. It affects men more than women, although women also can develop a characteristic pattern of hair loss. About one quarter of men have started balding by the time they are thirty, and about two thirds are either bald or are balding by 60.
One of the advantages of Hirudotherapy is improvement of blood circulation. Bald spots in your head have less hair density because they have less blood circulation compared to other parts. The proliferation of fungi in the area can be one of the factors that cause the reduced blood flow.
    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

Leech therapy is not generally associated with treating alopecia, but is very effective nonetheless. Blood circulation improves as a result and the body’s natural defense against fungal infection can once again be delivered to the affected areas, thereby promoting healing.

    Hirudotherapy to Treat Boils

Boils are infections deep in the skin. A boil begins as a red area and gradually becomes tender and firm. An ‘eye’ forms at the center and contains yellow fluid called pus, which is composed of white blood cells, dead bacteria and proteins.
During leech therapy, leeches are placed directly over the eye of the boil, so they can feed directly on the pus and at the same time, other leeches will be placed around the area to rid the body of pooled blood. This is important, because pooled blood causes pressure, leading to tenderness and will relieve the patient of pain.
    Hirudotherapy to Treat Shingles

Shingles [Herpes Zoster] is a viral skin disease in adults and occurs due to reactivation in adulthood of dormant viral matter leftover from a bout of chickenpox in childhood. Although lifelong immunity to chickenpox is commonly spoken about, the viruses that cause it may lie dormant for years in sensory nerve cells, reactivating themselves and causing an attack of shingles at times when the immune system is weak, resulting in inflammation, pain, and a rash of small skin blisters.

    Leeches shown during treatment of
    varied conditions

The skin manifestation of herpes zoster is not serious, but the pain caused by the inflammation of the underlying nerve can be severe, lasting for weeks.

Treatment for Shingles is designed merely to limit the severity and duration of pain because there are usually post infection complications like neuralgia [chronic severe pain around a nerve path]. Leeches saliva contains a substance that has analgesic [pain killing] effects. Pain relief is known to be more powerful and longer lasting than general pain relieving tablets.

    Hirudotherapy for Psoriasis

There are many skin diseases that can be treated with Hirudotherapy and one disease worth mentioning is Psoriasis.
Psoriasis is a common skin condition that occurs when the skin cells replace themselves too quickly. There are many different types, but the most common is chronic plaque psoriasis.
    Example of psoriasis

    What are the symptoms?

The extent of the disease can vary from a few tiny lesions here and there on the body, but are most commonly seen on knees, elbows, the chest and scalp, appearing as red, scaly patches that reveal fine silvery scales when scraped or scratched and often itch and feel uncomfortable. This condition can cause sufferers to become withdrawn and uncomfortable in forming relationships because of the way people react to the appearance of their skin.
    Blood expelled after different treatments

    What causes it?

Why psoriasis occurs is unknown, which makes it quite impossible to prevent. However, many things are thought to trigger the condition, including skin injury, sore throats/chest infections, some drug treatments, sunburn and even stress. As hopeless as it all may sound, ancient doctors have been using Hirudotherapy to improve the outcome of skin diseases like psoriasis. Not only are leeches useful for sucking pooled blood, their saliva also contains active substances that are bactericidal [fights off bacteria that proliferates over thick layers of excess skin cells]. Other substances in the leech’s saliva also cause gradual slowing of skin cell production, giving noticeable relief for patients

Demi Moore isi mentine tineretea cu ajutorul lipitorilor
    Evaluat de cititori:(26 voturi)
    Autor: ANAMARIA GHIBAN aprilie 2008

In vechime lipitorile erau frecvent folosite in diferite tratamente ale unor boli grave.
In orice caz, tratamentul trebuie facut sub supravegherea atenta a unui specialist, deoarece zona in care lipitoarea actioneaza trebuie dezinfectata si bandajata ulterior.
Demi a omis sa spuna, daca dupa terapie lipitorile au ramas in viata…

Leeches used to treat diabetes patients

Slamet Susanto , The Jakarta Post , Bantul | Wed, 04/30/2008 1:10 PM | Health
A patient has leech treatment for diabetes in Kauman village in Pleret, Bantul regency, Yogyakarta. (JP/Slamet Sutanto)
The leech (Hirudo medicinal) is a disgusting creature to many but in the hands of Muhyidin, it is believed to have the potential to cure diseases.
Everyday, Muhyidin's house in Kauman village, Pleret, Bantul regency in Yogyakarta is full of patients waiting for leeches to suck their blood.
The father of two explained that leeches can cure diseases since their saliva contains active substances including hirudin which is usually found in egg white and penicillin. Hirudin has the ability to dilute blood.
The leech has three jaws and is equipped with 100 small teeth. When a leech bites and starts sucking blood, it releases hirudin which enters the body and gets into the circulation.
Blood clots, or dirty blood inside the human body, will diffuse when affected by hirudin. The diffused dirty blood can later on be sucked out by the leech.
"The leech speeds up circulation of the blood and makes the patient's body feel fresh," said Muhyidin.
Faster blood circulation, he said, can also make the body's organs work faster.
"It channels oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body. If there's an obstacle some body organs may be disturbed and can eventually develop diseases," said Muhyidin.
Based on the results of research carried out in Germany, leeches were also recognized as being capable of reducing pain and inflammation. This is because by sucking dirty blood, static and poisoned blood the circulation can be improved. Clogging is reduced and circulation becomes faster.
"Leech treatment is well known all over the world and has been a research topic in the U.S., Russia, Germany and other European countries. It is used by many U.S. hospitals." he said.
Leech treatment is believed to have other benefits, including curing schizophrenia and depression and stimulating the eyes.It can deflate a swollen tongue and reduce the pain of a sore appendix. Medical students and medical staff from England have visited to see the proof of the benefits of leech treatment.
"After following leech therapy, I feel much better," said Sumitro, a stroke patient who has undergone leech therapy in Muhyidin's place seven times.
The first time that he came Sumitro's body was stiff and he couldn't talk. But after five sessions of leech therapy Sumitro is now able to speak.
"I also feel and stay healthy even though I take sugar in my drinks," said Bambang, from Lempuyangan, Yogyakarta who also has leech therapy.
"My parents suffer from diabetes, get treatment and take medicines prescribed by doctors," said Bambang.
Since he has been close to diabetes patients, Bambang is also diligent in reading about this disease. "I understand that diabetes can't be cured," he said.
The problem is that diabetes patients who go to a doctor often do not feel much improvement. Even when they have followed medical advice, the diabetes can still get worse.
"Seeing my parents' experience I'm sure that traditional therapy would be preferable." said Bambang.

Skill in administering leech therapy was developed by Muhyidin through personal experience after suffering from diabetes for 10 years, from 1980-1990, badly affecting his leg.
"My doctor recommended that I should have my leg amputated," he recalled.
At that time one of his friends suggested that he should use leeches.
He put two leeches on his leg to suck out the dirty blood. The result was that a week later the wound started drying and his foot wasn't amputated.
"Since then I have never felt pain again. Even when I drink I always add sugar, even though I have diabetes," he said.
In the last few years, one of his neighbors in Kauman suffered similar wounds and his leg was almost amputated. Remembering his own experience, Muhyidin went to the rice fields looking for leeches to cure his neighbor.
"The patient came to me to be cured. Since then, more patients started coming and I formally opened a leech treatment centre in 2002," he said.
Now almost every day, tens of patients come to Muhyidin's house. Every patient is, on average, given four leeches. The number of leeches used depends on the seriousness of case.
"If there's a diabetes patient with a leg in bad condition I'll place 11 leeches," he said.
For the treatment, the patient pays Rp 12,500 (US$1.30) per leech.
"Many patients are coming from poor families. For them, the treatment is free. It's a pity that they are sick and have to spend money on transport to get here, so why I should ask them to pay?" said Muhyidin.
Muhyidin is often asked to go to different cities to practice his therapy. Others patients come to his home.
"It's not just patients from Indonesia who come to my house. Patients from other countries also visit me," he said.
He said his patients came from as far away as Japan, Hong Kong, China, France, Holland, England, South Korea, Taiwan and neighboring countries such as Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. Most of them suffer from diabetes.
"I just got a call saying a group from Canada will come to have treatment," he said.
Leeches which are used for treatment can only be used once. After sucking blood during treatment the leech dies.
He said it is hard to get new leeches from Yogyakarta and surrounding cities.
"Pollution caused by pesticides has made the leech almost extinct. I'm forced to import leeches from Palembang (South Sumatra) because they are difficult to find here," he said

Leech therapy makes a revival in Kashmir
Submitted by Mohit Joshi on Thu, 04/24/2008 - 12:42.

Srinagar, April 24 : Doctors at various hospitals in Kashmir have adapted traditional leech therapy for patients suffering from various ailments like surgical reattachments of fingers, toes, ears for its ability to prevent venous congestion.
Leech therapy is considered quite effective, as when blood-sucking leeches bite a person, their saliva that contains several bioactive substances, causes blood flow to increase to the damaged tissue and prevents clotting.
Once bitten, a person can bleed for hours, allowing oxygenated blood to enter the wound area until veins re-grow and regain circulation.
Hospitals in Kashmir are using the leech therapy on patients suffering from arthritis, gout, chronic vertigo and sinusitis.
"Sinusitis results in mucous collection that leads to various ailments like headache, cough and cold. In order to get rid of it, surgical methods are adopted to drain the exodus. But leech therapy is easier than draining because leeches have certain enzymes that help to liquify and dissolve the substances and also have anti-biotic, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory substances that relieve the person from sinusitis," said Dr Nasir Hakeem, program incharge of leech therapy.
The hospitals using leeches for treatment follow the traditional Unani system of medicine.
The application of medicinal leech 'Hirudo medicinalis' for clearing poison from body has been practiced for long. In fact they have been used in medicine for thousands of years and is believed to have been in fashion in Egypt around 2,500 years ago.
Leech therapy was commonly used in traditional medicine for treating localized pain.
According to medical experts, more than 100 bioactive substances are present in the saliva of a leech that goes into the body of a patient while impure blood is extracted.
Earlier, people used to practice the traditional method on roadside or near shrines. And, traditional leech workers used leaches on multiple patients, thus, increasing the risk of transferable diseases.
But to avoid transmittable diseases, hospitals have adopted the single usage of a leech during the treatment. After a leech is used on any human, it is then killed as a part of the measures to prevent it from passing the infection from one patient to another.
A growing number of patients are showing interest, as they find the treatment in hospitals effective, hygienic and clean.
"I had a lot of pimples on my face but they have reduced now after I started undergoing leech therapy. It's very safe here in the hospitals. It is a kind of therapy where leeches purify the blood and we don't need any medicines for the treatment," said Faizaan Bhat, one patient.
"The leeches are found more during winters. It is a traditional form of therapy. Earlier people used to go to places like Hazrat Bal where they used to collect leaches in a pot. But here in the hospitals, everything is more hygienic," said Ajaz Ahmed, patient.
The medicinal leeches are brown, red striped and olive coloured. The creatures have two suckers, one at each end and have three jaws.
Leech species are carnivorous and the ones, which are predatory, feed on invertebrates like worms and snails. But a few of them are blood sucking and feed on vertebrates like reptiles and mammals.
Patients who have not been cured through conventional medicine are the ones who mostly come forward for the therapy.
It costs rupees 50 per leech used for treatment apart from other charges at the hospitals in Kashmir. (ANI)
